AM vs PM Explained

AM = Ante Meridiem (before midday), covering midnight to noon. PM = Post Meridiem (after midday), covering noon to midnight.

What AM and PM Mean

AM = Ante Meridiem (before midday), covering midnight to noon. PM = Post Meridiem (after midday), covering noon to midnight.

Converting to 24-Hour Time

To convert PM to 24-hour: add 12 to the hour. 14:30 = 2:30 PM. Midnight is 00:00.

A practical method

Treat 12-hour time as a label attached to a clock reading, not as a number that can be converted by always adding or subtracting 12. The two boundary hours need special handling: 12:00 AM begins a new day at midnight, while 12:00 PM is noon. For every other hour, AM keeps the hour unchanged in 24-hour time and PM adds 12.

  1. Identify the period: AM covers midnight through 11:59 in the morning; PM covers noon through 11:59 at night.
  2. Handle 12 first: Convert 12 AM to 00. Keep 12 PM as 12. This avoids the two most common conversion mistakes.
  3. Convert the remaining hours: For 1–11 AM, keep the hour. For 1–11 PM, add 12. Minutes and seconds do not change.
  4. Include the date when it matters: A time near midnight can belong to a different calendar day, so schedules should include both date and time.

Worked example

For a schedule that starts at 11:45 PM and finishes at 12:30 AM, convert the times to 23:45 and 00:30. Because the finish is after midnight, it belongs to the next day. The elapsed time is therefore 45 minutes, not a negative duration and not 12 hours 45 minutes.

Checks, edge cases, and common mistakes

  • Write noon as 12:00 PM and midnight as 12:00 AM, or use the clearer words noon and midnight.
  • Do not add 12 to 12 PM; it is already 12:00 in 24-hour time.
  • Do not leave AM or PM off invitations, alarms, travel plans, or medication schedules that use 12-hour time.
  • When audiences use different conventions, show both formats, for example 7:30 PM (19:30).
