How to Calculate Time Duration

Convert both times to minutes since midnight, subtract start from end, convert back to hours and minutes.

The Basic Method

Convert both times to minutes since midnight, subtract start from end, convert back to hours and minutes.

Overnight Calculation

When end time is earlier than start time, add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting.

A practical method

A time duration is the elapsed amount between a start instant and an end instant. For same-day times, subtracting minutes since midnight is enough. For overnight work, travel, or timers, the calculation must also account for the date boundary so an end time earlier on the clock is not treated as a negative result.

  1. Normalize both inputs: Convert each time to a consistent 24-hour format and include dates when the interval can cross midnight.
  2. Convert to one unit: Minutes are convenient: hours × 60 + minutes. This avoids borrowing mistakes.
  3. Handle overnight intervals: If the end is on the next day, add 1,440 minutes before subtracting the start.
  4. Present useful units: Convert the result back to hours and minutes, and optionally decimal hours for payroll or billing.

Worked example

For 22:35 to 06:20 the next day, start = 1,355 minutes and end = 380 minutes. Add 1,440 to the end, then calculate 1,820 − 1,355 = 465 minutes. The duration is 7 hours 45 minutes, or 7.75 decimal hours.

Checks, edge cases, and common mistakes

  • State whether the end time is on the same day or the next day.
  • Subtract unpaid breaks after finding the gross elapsed duration.
  • Be explicit about inclusive boundaries when counting full calendar days.
  • For real timestamps around clock changes, use time-zone-aware instants rather than wall-clock subtraction.
