Gross Pay vs Net Pay

Gross pay is your total earnings before any deductions are taken.

What Is Gross Pay

Gross pay is your total earnings before any deductions are taken.

Common Deductions

Depending on jurisdiction, deductions may include income taxes, social contributions, health insurance, retirement contributions, garnishments, and other payroll items.

What Is Net Pay

Net pay is what you receive after applicable required and voluntary deductions. There is no universal take-home percentage.

A practical method

Gross pay is earnings before taxes and deductions. Net pay is the amount remaining after required and voluntary deductions are applied. The difference is not one universal percentage: it depends on jurisdiction, pay period, taxable benefits, withholding choices, pension or insurance contributions, and other payroll items.

  1. Calculate gross earnings: Combine eligible regular pay, overtime, premiums, bonuses, and commissions for the pay period.
  2. Separate deduction types: List taxes, social contributions, benefits, retirement contributions, garnishments, and other items individually.
  3. Apply taxable-base rules: Some deductions reduce taxable income while others are taken after tax; use the applicable payroll rules.
  4. Reconcile net pay: Subtract all deductions from gross pay and compare the result with the pay statement.

Worked example

If gross pay is $2,000 and the pay statement contains $310 tax, $150 social contributions, and $90 voluntary deductions, illustrative net pay is $1,450. This arithmetic does not determine whether the deduction amounts are legally correct.

Checks, edge cases, and common mistakes

  • Do not estimate take-home pay from a single flat percentage when accurate payroll data is available.
  • Keep employer-paid costs separate from deductions taken from the employee.
  • Bonuses and benefits can have different withholding treatment.
  • Use official payroll guidance or a qualified professional for jurisdiction-specific results.
