The same letters can refer to different regions, and some abbreviations change when daylight saving time begins or ends. For reliable scheduling, pair the local time with a city-based zone or an explicit UTC offset.

1. Identify the location: Ask which country or city the abbreviation refers to; the letters alone may not be enough.
2. Check the date: Seasonal clock changes mean the relevant offset can differ between winter and summer.
3. Resolve the offset: Convert the named zone to its UTC offset for that specific date and time.
4. Publish an unambiguous version: For shared schedules, use a city zone plus UTC, for example Europe/Ljubljana (UTC+2 on that date).

Worked example

A meeting written only as 9:00 CST is unclear because CST can describe Central Standard Time in North America or China Standard Time in other contexts. Writing 9:00 America/Chicago or 9:00 Asia/Shanghai, plus the date, identifies the intended instant.
