Hours Breakdown
Formula
Overtime = Total Hours − Threshold Hours
Hours worked beyond the configured threshold (daily or weekly) are classified as overtime. When 'Both' is selected, the higher of daily and weekly overtime applies.
Example: Weekly Overtime
Tips
- Select 'Daily' for overtime after a certain number of hours per day.
- Select 'Weekly' for overtime after a certain number of hours per week.
- Select 'Both' for the higher of the two calculations.
- Under the U.S. federal FLSA, covered nonexempt workers generally receive overtime after 40 hours in a workweek.
- The 8-hour daily threshold is configurable example logic, not a general federal FLSA standard; daily rules may depend on state law, contract, employer policy, or another jurisdiction.
- Work days per week affects this calculator's daily-threshold model.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between daily and weekly overtime?
Daily overtime kicks in when hours exceed the daily threshold in a single day. Weekly overtime kicks in when total weekly hours exceed the weekly threshold.
How does 'Both' mode work?
Both modes calculate overtime from both daily and weekly perspectives, then use the higher of the two overtime values.
What are the default thresholds?
The calculator starts with an illustrative 8-hour daily threshold and a 40-hour weekly threshold. Under the U.S. federal FLSA, the 40-hour workweek threshold generally applies to covered nonexempt workers; an 8-hour daily threshold is not a general federal FLSA rule. Adjust both fields for the applicable state law, contract, employer policy, or jurisdiction.
Are overtime calculations legally binding?
No. This is a configurable threshold model, not a legal determination. Overtime eligibility and treatment depend on applicable law, exemptions, contracts, employer policy, jurisdiction, and the worker’s circumstances.
What duration formats are accepted?
You can enter '45h', '45:00', '45 hours', or any other format the duration parser accepts.
